Excellence in Education Student Scholarship
After consideration of outstanding applications from graduate and undergraduate candidates , four winners were awarded the Excellence in Education Scholarship. These winners demonstrate excellence in academic pursuits as well as their professional and personal lives.
The award selections are based on accomplishments in human resources, academics, campus and community involvement and recommendations from professors, advisors and/or employers. Their achievements deserve congratulations!
The scholarship recipients each receive a $1,000 grant plus the proceeds from The HRSouthwest Conference silent auction. We wish these students and all of the candidates who applied for this scholarship continued success in both educational and professional endeavors.
2017 Excellence in Education Scholarship Recipients
University of North Texas
Victor Chen is currently a full-time student and teaching assistant at the University of North Texas. Victor’s focus is Organizational Behavior and Human Resource Management. He enjoys researching and discussing human resource trends with fellow students. Victor will graduate in May 2018. In recognition of his hard work and high academic performance, Victor earned the award for Outstanding Graduate Student in Organizational Behavior and Human Resource Management from the UNT Department of Management. Victor also serves as VP for UNT SHRM Chapter.
Western Governors University
Bobby Kindle is a student pursuing his bachelor’s degree in Human Resource Management at Western Governors University. Bobby has been a manager at Walmart for six years. In his free time, Bobby enjoys supporting the local community by volunteering at the Tarrant Area Food Bank, Goodwill and the Center of Hope’s Jobs for Life Program. Bobby is also an active member of SHRM, HR People + Strategy and the Fort Worth Human Resource Management Association. Upon graduation, Bobby plans to pursue a master’s degree in management and leadership
Rawls College of Business, Texas Tech University
Jessica Layton is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in management with a concentration in human resources at the Rawls College of Business at Texas Tech University. She served as the vice president of merit for her student SHRM chapter and in that role helped the chapter earn the 2016-2017 National SHRM Student Chapter Merit Award for Outstanding Student Chapter. Jessica will serve as the student chapter’s president for the 2017-2018 academic year. She also holds three jobs, an office manager for a local wellness center, a human resources consultant with Identify Corporate Innovation, and as a human resource intern at Lubbock Electric Company.
Caston Xavier Fernandes
University of Texas at Arlington
Caston Xavier Fernandes is an Information Systems graduate student at the University of Texas at Arlington. As an undergraduate at St. John College of Engineering & Management from the University of Mumbai, he contributed in designing the web portal Build Your Brand for the overall development of an undergraduate student and has a publication to his credit focusing on the use of NFC technology for train ticketing. An aspiring data scientist whose degree concentrated in data science and analytics, Caston is looking forward to developing applications that provide estimations and predictions to assist with strategic decision making.
