Excellence in Education Student Scholarship
After consideration of outstanding applications from graduate and undergraduate candidates , four winners were awarded the Excellence in Education Scholarship. These winners demonstrate excellence in academic pursuits as well as their professional and personal lives.
The award selections are based on accomplishments in human resources, academics, campus and community involvement and recommendations from professors, advisors and/or employers. Their achievements deserve congratulations!
The scholarship recipients each receive a $1,000 grant plus the proceeds from The HRSouthwest Conference silent auction. We wish these students and all of the candidates who applied for this scholarship continued success in both educational and professional endeavors.
2018 Excellence in Education Scholarship Recipients
Texas State University
Mollie Barnes is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Business Management with a concentration in Human Resources at Texas State University and plans to graduate in December 2019. Mollie served as Director of Planning for her student SHRM chapter and in that role helped the chapter earn the 2017-2018 National SHRM Superior Merit Award. In 2017-2018, Mollie also received Member of the Year in her Texas State SHRM chapter and held an intern position at The Emerson Group in Pennsylvania this past summer. Mollie is also an active member of Chi Beta Delta, where she supports the community by volunteering, and is also involved in the honor societies Alpha Lambda Delta and Beta Gamma Sigma.
Naveen Jindal School of Management, University of Texas at Dallas
Haylee Keisler is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Human Resource Management at the University of Texas at Dallas. Haylee is an active member of the SHRM chapter at UT Dallas and has been elected as the Director of Corporate Relations for the 2018-2019 academic school year. Haylee looks forward to developing that position as she networks with local professionals to help build the awareness and foundation of the growing Human Resources department at UT Dallas. Haylee has interned at a dental service company in the Richardson area, and she is currently the Human Resources Intern at Sanden International in Wylie, Texas. Haylee is also involved in the Wish Makers Club which grants gravely ill children’s wishes with the Make a Wish Foundation.
Texas Woman’s University
Josh Talbert is a senior at Texas Woman’s University in Denton, TX, and is pursuing a Bachelor of Business Administration with concentration in Human Resources Management. Josh currently holds an Associate of Science in Transportation and an Associate of Applied Science in Intelligence Studies and Technology from the Community College of the Air Force.
While attending TWU, Josh has maintained a 4.0 GPA, earning himself a spot on the Chancellor’s List for the last four consecutive semesters. Josh is a member of the TWU SHRM chapter, North Texas SHRM, national SHRM, and two honors societies.
Josh was accepted into Peterbilt’s 2018 Summer Internship program where he worked with their Dealer Network Development team in Denton, TX. While there, he worked on projects with real impact on business profitability including Peterbilt signage inventory and supporting necessary back-end systems for new dealerships.
Josh is an Air Force veteran with more than seven years on active duty as a Korean Cryptologic Language Analyst and more than three years in the Air Force Reserve as a Ground Transportation Specialist. Josh and his wife, Samantha, have a four-year-old daughter, Maliya, three dogs, a cat, and too many fish to count!
University of Texas at Dallas
Alayna Thomas is a rising Senior at the University of Texas at Dallas who is actively pursuing two degrees. Alayna is pursuing her bachelor’s degree in Human Resource Management and her master’s degree in Business Administration. Alayna is currently the SHRM at UTD chapter President, a Residential Advisor, and serves on the Discipline Committee. Over the summer, Alayna was an Intern in the People Department at Southwest Airlines. Alayna finds joy in travel, purposeful projects, and time with friends.
